Earl Argun Af Lavandal
Argun Af Lavandal is a deeply nuanced character, shaped by a rich history of personal growth, internal conflict, and transformation. His story begins with a noble heritage in the Earldom of Aelfshaw, where his initial fame came from his membership in the Knights of the Rose, an esteemed order dedicated to honour, culture and virtue. Known as the "Knight of the Lavender," Argun's sobriquet was derived from his lands near the Lavender Hills, a region synonymous with the scent of the purple flower. However, his early life was far from perfect, marked by youthful mistakes and a hidden love affair that defied the very codes he was supposed to uphold. The relationship with Salopay Wilddieb, a woman with ties to a criminal underworld and the poaching of lavender from his own lands, served as a stark contrast to the image he projected as a knight. Their child, Fitzroy, was born in secret, and despite Argun’s love and care for both Salopay and his son, the affair remained hidden and unacknowledged. This chapter of his life speaks to Argun's internal struggle between duty, honour, and personal desire, choices he would eventually come to regret but could not erase.
Argun’s pivotal moment came when he encountered the ‘Heroes of Everwatch’ at the Tournament of the Tourney Meadows, a contest that sparked his disenchantment with the corruption of the Knights of the Rose. When Lady Maelara’s rightful victory was denied, allegedly due to bribery by the bard Galsitan Gresvurian, Argun found the dishonour too much to bear. This led him to leave the order, an act that was considered a betrayal by the Knights. They responded by stripping him of his lands and title, leaving him a fugitive from his homeland. His fortunes took a turn when he joined the Southern Crusade, where he proved himself as a capable leader of the 3rd Crusader Foote, a company of heavy infantry and pioneers. Argun’s leadership was exceptional during the early stages of the war, and his reputation as a warrior and commander grew. This reputation would lead him to Lord Douglas Tanthalus of Stonehaven, where he became a trusted right-hand man. Under his management, the Stonehaven Regiment, formed from his former company, prospered. It was here that Argun’s personal life stabilized: he married Salopay and publicly acknowledged their son, Fitzroy.
With the civil unrest back in Aelfshaw, Argun’s journey came full circle when he returned to his homeland. In an unexpected twist, he helped bring an end to the strife, ultimately becoming the new Earl of Aelfshaw. In his rule, Argun was wise and measured, known for his "light touch" governance. He reformed the Knights of the Rose, ensuring that it was no longer bound by rigid practices but instead embraced a more inclusive and practical approach to leadership. Despite the protocols of the empire, Argun acknowledged Duchess Katalin as his liege lord.
Argun’s story is one of redemption, of balancing his duty and desires, and of seeking a better future for his family and his lands. Though he struggled with the expectations placed on him by his order and society, in the end, he found a way to reconcile his past actions with a noble vision for the future. His legacy is one of wisdom, leadership, and the quiet strength that comes from facing one’s own faults and choosing to move forward with integrity.
