Merikka (meh-RIK-kah) is a serene goddess who oversees the natural cycle of family life, guiding its course through the days, seasons, and years. Her deep connection to dates and cycles has made her a revered patron of expectant mothers. She is depicted as a grey-haired woman of fading beauty, holding a basket of grain and a long scroll, both symbols of her divine authority. Merikka harbors a deep resentment for chaotic deities and any force that seeks to disrupt her work.
Clerics of Merikka play an essential role in their communities, coordinating groups of farmers to ensure crops are planted and harvested at the most opportune times. They mediate disputes between warring family members, provide care for pregnant women, and officiate important life milestones, such as coming-of-age rituals and marriages. In the absence of other officials, they are also tasked with enforcing laws and administering punishment to wrongdoers.
Merikka teaches her faithful about orderly schedules, caring relationships, prudent savings, and honest labor. She teaches that children must respect their parents, husbands must respect their wives, wives must respect their husbands, and parents must love and teach their children, just as Merikka teaches her flock.
