Lady Ygretta
Ygretta, the illegitimate daughter of the late Duke Rocco, was conceived during the mystical Druidic festival of the Beltane Fires. Though she never knew her father, the Beltane tradition dictated that any child born during the festival would be blessed and protected. Ygretta's early years were spent at the ancient Stone Circle of Cerne, where she grew up as an acolyte of the druids. Under their guidance, she immersed herself in their ways, preparing to become an apprentice druid. However, this path was interrupted when her father, Duke Rocco, summoned her to Castle Everwatch.
At Castle Everwatch, Ygretta studied under the court wizard, Bartholomew Grimm, who was a skilled but unsettling figure. Although she learned much from him, as she grew into womanhood, his increasingly intrusive and unwelcome attentions made her uneasy. She discovered that her own magical abilities were more raw, wild, and intrinsic, not the studied, bookish magic Bartholomew tried to teach her. It was a volatile and powerful force, one that contrasted sharply with his formal and methodical approach. However, before she could escape the uncomfortable situation, the humanoids launched their assault and sacked Castle Everwatch. Amidst the chaos of the attack, Ygretta witnessed Bartholomew Grimm use his magic in a desperate attempt to repel the horde. Unfortunately, he was captured, tortured, and consumed by the invaders. In the chaos, Ygretta tried to flee but was caught, ravished, and cast from the castle walls into the debris below. Mortally wounded and barely clinging to life, she lay amidst the devastation, near death, until an injured old woman named Mistress Edith found her the following day.
While the orcs slept off their bloodlust, Edith, with great effort, carried Ygretta away from the ruins. But Ygretta's injuries were grave, and it was only Edith's husband, Wellun, a healer and trader, who could offer any hope of saving her. Using healing salves at Edith's instruction, Wellun tended to Ygretta's wounds, though unaware of Edith's own injuries. Tragically, Edith passed away from her wounds, but not before making Wellun promise to take Ygretta to safety. Devastated by Edith's death, Wellun honoured her last request and carried Ygretta away, doing his best to keep her alive and protect her from the dangers still lingering in the war-torn lands.
Ygretta's journey has been one of immense pain and transformation, marked by both literal and metaphorical blindness. Her tragic past, tortured by the orcs and her loss of sight, plunged her into a state of delirium where she could no longer grasp the present but instead saw through the veil of prophecy. These unsettling visions, though unnerving, revealed her uncanny ability to foresee events and give wisdom.
Her story takes a turn when she was discovered by the Heroes of Everwatch and brought to her half-sister, Duchess Katalin. The revelation of her true lineage shook both women to the core, Katalin, with no prior knowledge of Ygretta, welcomed her sister with open arms despite the shock. Yet, despite their shared blood, their worlds were vastly different. Katalin, though she embraced her new sibling, saw Ygretta as fragile, scarred by the horrors she had lived through. In many ways, Katalin may have unconsciously become a protector to Ygretta, even though the young sorceress, being so close in age, had once had her own mind and will.
Though Ygretta regained her sight and sanity through the healing powers of Bishop Oriforth, the price was heavy, her mental and emotional scars were still there. She returned to the world as a changed woman, more subdued and cautious than her younger years suggested. Her powers as a sorceress, a talent that seemed to be linked to her intense experiences, made her even more valuable to those around her, but they also isolated her. Still, her determination to heal and her quiet, semi-reclusive life in the manor outside Bonran spoke of a woman who has found some semblance of peace, even if it is built upon the foundation of loss.
Though Ygretta’s beauty shines through, her long blonde hair and blue eyes give her an ethereal quality, her presence betrays an aura of someone who has faced battles both physical and emotional. At only twenty two, she carries the weight of her years on her shoulders. Perhaps it is in the quiet solitude of her home where she finds a balance between the woman she is and the echoes of the prophecy-filled madness she once lived through. The rumours of her occasional adventuring hint at her desire to reclaim a sense of agency in her life, showing that even though Ygretta may prefer isolation, she is still driven by a force inside her to seek out something more. Her future, one that blends sorcery, sisterhood, and a sense of having lived through too much, remains an open question. Would she remain in her retreat, content with her powers and prophecies, or would the call of adventure beckon her again? Whatever path she takes, it is clear that Ygretta's story is one of extraordinary resilience, bound by both the scars of her past and the strength she’s developed in overcoming them.
